A Bluffer's Guide to the What??
Henry offers “a Bluffer’s Guide to the European Parliament” for Americans. All well and good, but . . . who would want such a thing? I mean, if you’re not already an expert on the European Parliament, why would you want a bluffer’s guide to it? It’s not like anyone over here cares about it!

It’s entirely possible that the bluffer’s guide is aimed at an audience slightly wider than Americans, surely?

Henry specifically wrote: “Most Americans only have the vaguest idea of what the European Parliament is - so I thought it no harm to provide the beginnings of a quick bluffer’s guide to the EP.” So I think we Americans are the audience.

If meant seriously, this is a rather astonishing post. How do you know that “no one” in the U.S. cares about the European Parliament? Are we supposed to take your word for this b/c you are a tenured professor of political science and therefore can be presumed to know exactly what all Americans do and do not care about when it comes to political matters, be they in the U.S. or abroad? The number of Americans interested in the EP is probably quite small, I’ll grant you that, but I very much doubt that it’s zero.

LFC: Yes, you’ve figured it out exactly. As a tenured professor of political science, I have the right to speak for all Americans. Actually, untenured professors of political science have this right too. The only difficulty comes when two of us disagree . . .
