Is Cheerios a Drug?

Popular US breakfast cereal Cheerios is a drug, at least if the claims made on the label by its manufacturer General Mills are anything to go by, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said. “Based on claims made on your product’s label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug,” the FDA said in a letter to General Mills which was posted on the federal agency’s website Tuesday.

Here’s the story. The FDA is right, but for the wrong reason. It’s not about adults with heart disease, it’s about the children. If you have a toddler, you know that Cheerios are most certainly a drug. My son stuffs handful after handful into his mouth.

That’s why they call Cheerios “baby crack.”

I have Cheerios for breakfast, with fruit, just about everyday because I’m too lazy to prepare oatmeal. Is this circular reasoning? It’s like a Standing ‘O’ while sitting down. I’d rather eat eggs, bacon, sausage, homw fries and buttered toast, which I did for many of my 78 years, resulting in my need for real drugs. If it weren’t for the different fresh fruits added, I’d go back to the eggs, etc. (Ah, for the good old days of lunches at Locke-Ober’s that included Eggs Benedict - with either Canadian Bacon or Smoked Salmon!)
