Cutting Political Science Departments

The unthinkable has happened at Wisconsin Lutheran College:

Wisconsin Lutheran College last week not only eliminated the jobs of 18 people — it also ended the teaching of political science.

And then they twist the knife:

…the college determined it wasn’t necessary to its liberal arts mission to offer political science.

Michael Brintnall, head of the American Political Science Association, rejoins:

It would be thought to be a central component of a liberal arts education. The subject matter is too central to civic life and understanding where we are going in the world to not offer the content.

If it’s any consolation, they seem to have cut economics first. (That is just a guess, since political science is still listed in the department roster here http://www.wlc.edu/academics/ while economics is not, but an economics department probably once existed since it is referenced here http://www.wlc.edu/academics/bss/ .) The way I see it, this is good news - as long as our home institution has an academic economics department, the canary lives.

My thoughts on this over here.
