Kenya Electoral Train Wreck Update #2

“The Monkey Cage” certainly isn’t your standard medium for late-breaking news, but today’s dramatic developments in Kenya (click here for the New York Times coverage) provide a good opportunity for some catch-up reading for those who haven’t been paying close attention. Here and here and here and here are news reports that caught my eye over the last few weeks and help provide context for today’s developments.

Call me a cynic on this one (I’m usually the optimist in any group), but I’m doubtful that negotiations between Kibaki and Odinga will resolve this crisis, particularly given the apparent power of hardliners on each side and the failure of previous rounds of negotiations between these two politicians. I’m curious to see the Human Rights Watch report mentioned in the Times article and see if Odinga is personally implicated in the violence in Rift Valley.
